Navigating the Map
Virtual Cartographies visualizes two types of materials: 1) data collected from the Spanish Ministry of Justice that details the over 2,600 mass grave located throughout Spanish territories, and 2) a rich collection of multimedia texts directly related to specific mass grave sites. There are eight separate layers listed alphabetically, each identified with different color pinpoints. In the sidebar of the map located on the right, under “About,” you can view a list of the different layers and their corresponding pinpoint colors. The layer with mass grave information is organized alphabetically using the name of the grave sites. Each multimedia element (i.e. articles, audio, images, novels, videos, weblogs) is divided into a separate layer and listed alphabetically. The texts within each layer are also listed alphabetically using the title of the element. To view the data within each layer, click on “Browse data” in the sidebar (or at the bottom of the map). The titles of each element can be filtered using keywords in the search bar when browsing.
The materials can be navigated by clicking on the different color pinpoints located directly on the map, or by scrolling through the “Browse data” tab in the sidebar. The layers can be toggled on and off by clicking on the “eye” icon. You can view any combination of layers by turning them on and off. The “eye” icon can be found under the “About” or “Browse data” tab in the sidebar, or the “Data layers” control icon on the left side of the screen.

Important note: The mass grave data used for this map was downloaded directly from the Spanish Ministry of Justice’s National Catalogue of Open Data and is used for their now-defunct “Map of Graves.” Regarding the location of mass graves designated on the data, they write: “We inform the citizens concerned that the locations of the burial places on the map do not correspond to their real geographical coordinates; rather the symbols have been placed over the populated area where they are located.”
